Acumen invests in Pullus Africa to expand poultry market access in Nigeria

News in Brief:
-Acumen’s investment will help Pullus Africa expand poultry market access and strengthen cold-chain infrastructure across Nigeria.
-Pullus Africa aims to increase annual bird sales from 246,000 in 2025 to more than 2 million by 2029.
Global impact investor Acumen recently invested in Nigerian agribusiness Pullus Africa as the company expands market access and strengthens supply chain systems for poultry farmers nationwide.
The investment will support the expansion of bird aggregation networks and the development of cold-chain infrastructure to enable farmers to supply poultry products consistently throughout the year rather than relying heavily on seasonal demand.
Pullus Africa Expands Poultry Network
According to the company, more than 6,000 farmers are currently registered on its platform, while over 28,000 poultry producers have received training through programmes focused on poultry management, production efficiency, and business operations.
Pullus Africa also disclosed that it sold approximately 246,000 birds in 2025 and is targeting annual sales of more than 2 million birds by 2029 as it scales operations across Nigeria’s poultry value chain.
Poultry Farmers Face Market Access Challenges
Many small-scale poultry producers in Nigeria continue to face significant challenges accessing the market, including inconsistent buyers, delayed payments, unstable pricing structures, and poor market coordination. These problems have forced many farmers to limit production cycles to festive seasons when poultry demand and prices are generally more predictable.
Industry stakeholders believe the investment-backed model could help establish more structured trading channels between farmers and buyers while improving pricing consistency and payment reliability.
Cold-Chain Infrastructure to Reduce Losses
The expansion of cold-chain infrastructure is expected to reduce losses linked to poor storage systems and limited distribution capacity, which plagues Nigeria’s poultry industry.
Poor refrigeration and weak transportation systems have also contributed significantly to poultry spoilage, often forcing farmers to sell products quickly at reduced prices to avoid losses.
The improved infrastructure would support better product preservation, wider distribution reach, and more stable year-round market participation for producers.
Poultry Sector Critical to Food Security
Nigeria continues to intensify efforts to improve domestic food production as public and private sector stakeholders aim to address protein supply shortages through increased poultry output.
Poultry remains one of the country’s most consumed and relatively affordable sources of animal protein, making the industry a key focus for investment and expansion.
Pullus Africa stated that its farmer engagement programmes combine technical training with business support services to help poultry producers improve farm management practices and adapt to changing market conditions.
Rising Demand Drives Investment Interest
The investment comes amid growing demand for poultry products across Africa, driven largely by population growth and rising pressure on food systems.
The development also highlights growing interest in strengthening agricultural infrastructure, improving supply chain efficiency, and creating more stable market systems that can support long-term food security and agribusiness growth across the continent.
