Akwa Ibom Unveils Oil Palm Revolution, 202km Roads to Drive Rural Prosperity

News in Brief

-Akwa Ibom State has announced a comprehensive oil palm revolution offering farmers improved seedlings, grants, and land support.

-It includes RAAMP-backed commissioning of an 11km road in Nsit Ibom LGA, part of 202km delivered statewide, with 19 maintenance groups ensuring sustainability.

Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno has unveiled ambitious plans for a large-scale oil palm revolution to transform the state’s agriculture. The initiative was announced during the inauguration of an 11-kilometre road project in Nsit Ibom Local Government Area, as he promised to reshape the state's economy, enhance food sufficiency, and spark rural prosperity.

Represented by Deputy Governor Akon Eyakenyi, Governor Eno positioned the oil palm push as a cornerstone of his administration's strategy to amplify agricultural production and forge lasting economic pathways. This coordinated framework targets scaling oil palm cultivation, processing, and marketing across all 31 local government areas, with farmers set to receive improved seedlings, grants, and land preparation aid to deepen sector engagement.

"The essence is giving Akwa Ibom people services that will improve their quality of life," he stated.

The timing could not be more strategic. Akwa Ibom's fertile lands and historical edge in palm oil align with national drives like the Oil Palm Growers Association of Nigeria's (OPGAN) five-year replanting of 1.5 million hectares, aiming to vault the country to third globally in production.

Prioritising high-yield varieties and agro-industrial hubs allows the state to achieve not just volume but value addition; processing crude palm oil into derivatives for export and local industries. This builds on recent moves, including free farm inputs distribution and the Tree Crops Development Programme, underscoring Eno's ARISE Agenda for diversification beyond oil.

RAAMP Infrastructure Fuels Farm-to-Market Access

Central to the event was the commissioning of the Owot Uta-Nung Oku-Edeobom road, linking Nsit Ibom and Ibesikpo Asutan LGAs under the Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project (RAAMP). Commissioner for Agriculture, Offiong Offor, highlighted the state's fulfilled counterpart funding, enabling seamless project rollout. She revealed RAAMP has delivered over 202 kilometres of rural roads across 18 LGAs, alongside 19 road maintenance groups totalling 65 members in 14 areas, ensuring long-term durability.

Improved roads mean faster farm-to-market trips and easy access to processing centres, cutting post-harvest losses that plague Nigerian farmers. Offor stressed this infrastructure curbs rural-urban drift by creating local jobs in processing and trade. RAAMP, backed by the World Bank, French Development Agency, and International Labour Organisation, blends roads with agro-logistics centres and markets to hike productivity and incomes. National Coordinator Aminu Mohammed praised Akwa Ibom as a top performer among 19 states, securing Phase 2 funding through consistent execution.

Broader Implications for Nigeria's Agric Sector

Governor Eno reaffirmed infrastructure as a lifeline, with every LGA receiving roads, clinics, and schools. This oil palm initiative aligns with federal goals of reducing Nigeria's palm oil import reliance of over 1 million tonnes yearly while curbing youth unemployment.

Stakeholders, such as the World Bank, noted that RAAMP's role in sustainable networks is vital as climate shifts demand resilient farming.

The National Coordinator of RAAMP, Aminu Mohammed, described Akwa Ibom as one of the top-performing states among the 19 participating states in the programme.

According to him, the state’s strong performance has earned it a qualification for the second phase of the project, reflecting consistency and effective implementation.

Mohammed explained that the project combines road infrastructure, agro-logistics centres, and rural markets to improve agricultural productivity, expand market access, and increase income opportunities for rural residents.
