The government of Edo State has officially commenced the 2026 farming season, urging farmers to adopt innovative agricultural practices and make effective use of improved inputs.
The Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Jerry Uwangue, made the call during the flag-off ceremony held at the State Agricultural Hub.
Government Urges Timely Planting and Improved Practices
Uwangue explained that the event was organised not only to mark the beginning of the farming season but also to sensitise farmers on the importance of timely planting and the adoption of modern farming techniques.
He emphasised the benefits of using improved seeds, fertilisers, agrochemicals and mechanised equipment to boost productivity.
According to him, early and coordinated planting combined with quality inputs significantly improves crop yields and ensures food availability for the growing population.
Programme Aligns with SHINE Development Agenda
The commissioner noted that strengthening the agricultural sector remains a priority for the state government.
He said the initiative aligns with the development framework of Governor Monday Okpebholo under the SHINE Agenda, particularly in advancing economic growth and food sufficiency.
Uwangue reiterated the government’s commitment to creating an enabling environment that allows farmers and agribusinesses to thrive.
He also called on local government councils and agricultural extension officers to intensify efforts in mobilising and educating farmers across the state on improved farming practices.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Rebecca Osedebamen Bamaiyi, described the event as an important platform for stakeholders within the agricultural sector.
She said the programme enables farmers, agribusinesses and partners to interact, access improved agricultural inputs and gain knowledge on modern farming techniques aimed at improving productivity.
