EU Unveils €290m Investment Package to Boost Nigeria’s Agriculture, Other Sectors

News in Brief:

-The EU has announced a €290 million investment package, including €86 million to support Nigeria’s cocoa and dairy value chains through improved access to finance and climate-smart agriculture.

-The funding is expected to help farmers and agribusinesses scale production, access new markets, and drive growth in the agricultural sector.

Nigeria’s farmers and agribusiness owners are set to benefit from a new €290 million investment package announced by the European Union under its Global Gateway strategy, with a strong focus on strengthening agricultural value chains, improving access to finance, and supporting climate-smart farming.

The announcement was made during the Eighth Ministerial Dialogue held in Abuja, co-chaired by Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, and EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas. The initiative forms part of efforts to deepen economic ties between Nigeria and the EU while supporting the country’s agricultural transformation agenda.

Fresh Funding for Cocoa and Dairy Value Chains

Out of the total package, €86 million has been earmarked specifically for agriculture, targeting the cocoa and dairy sectors, two critical areas for Nigeria’s food security and export growth. The funding will provide easier access to affordable financing for agribusinesses and smallholder farmers through the Bank of Industry Nigeria, supported by the European Investment Bank.

For farmers, this means increased opportunities to scale production, invest in better inputs, and adopt improved farming practices. The programme will also support climate-smart agriculture, helping producers adapt to changing weather conditions while maintaining productivity.

The investment aligns with Nigeria’s ambition to boost milk production and expand cocoa exports to international markets, particularly Europe, where demand for sustainably sourced products continues to grow.

What It Means for Agribusiness Growth

Beyond agriculture, the broader investment package includes funding for digital infrastructure and skills development, which are expected to indirectly benefit the agricultural sector. Improved internet connectivity and digital tools can enhance market access, enable precision farming, and streamline supply chains for agribusiness operators.

According to Jozef Síkela, the initiative is designed to create sustainable jobs and long-term economic opportunities, both for Nigerians and European partners. This includes building technical capacity across sectors, ensuring that farmers and agribusinesses are better equipped to compete regionally and globally.

For agribusiness owners, the combination of financing, training, and infrastructure support presents a significant opportunity to expand operations, improve efficiency, and access new export markets.

With total EU commitments to Nigeria now nearing €1 billion since 2025, the latest package signals growing international confidence in Nigeria’s agricultural potential and offers a pathway for farmers and agribusinesses to play a central role in the country’s economic growth.
