A Kaduna Magistrates’ Court has sentenced a 27-year-old farm manager, Israel Tony, to eight months' imprisonment for stealing 30 crates of eggs from his employer.
The court, presided over by Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel, delivered the ruling on Wednesday, ordering that the sentence be served without the option of a fine.
Convict Ordered to Pay Compensation
In addition to the custodial sentence, the court directed the convict to pay ₦243,000 as compensation to the complainant for the stolen goods.
The ruling underscores the court’s stance on holding offenders accountable for economic losses suffered by victims.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Inspector Chidi Leo, told the court that the offence was committed between February and April at Maraba Rido in Kaduna.
He explained that the complainant, Williams Dogo of Sabon Tasha, reported the incident to the police on April 22 after discovering discrepancies in the farm’s account records.
Irregularities Led to Arrest
According to the prosecution, the convict, who had been employed as a farm manager, was arrested after the complainant noticed irregularities in the account book.
Further investigation revealed that Tony had stolen 30 crates of eggs from the farm. Leo told the court that the convict confessed to the crime upon arrest.
He added that the stolen eggs were sold to an individual identified as Bello Aminu, who remains at large. The prosecutor stated that the offence contravenes the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017.
The court’s judgment reflects ongoing efforts to address theft and misconduct within Nigeria’s agricultural sector.
