News in brief:
—The government has provided fertiliser support to smallholder farmers in the FCT to improve productivity and reduce farming costs.
—The intervention is expected to increase crop yields, strengthen rural livelihoods and support Nigeria’s food security goals.
Nigeria's Federal Government has distributed 11,720 bags of fertiliser to 2,930 farmers across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) as part of efforts to improve agricultural productivity and strengthen food security.
The intervention, coordinated by the National Agricultural Development Fund (NADF), will help smallholder farmers access essential inputs, reduce production costs and increase food supply.
Government Targets Increased Agricultural Output
Speaking during the official launch of the programme in Abuja, the Minister of State for the FCT, Mariya Mahmoud, said the initiative demonstrates the government’s commitment to supporting farmers and improving Nigeria’s food systems.
She described the distribution as an important step towards increasing agricultural output and improving the economic well-being of farming communities within the FCT.
Mahmoud said agriculture remains a major driver of economic growth and that empowering farmers with the right resources is critical to achieving sustainable food security.
The minister noted that access to quality agricultural inputs remains one of the major challenges affecting farmers’ productivity.
She said the fertiliser intervention would help beneficiaries improve yields, reduce production expenses and strengthen their capacity to produce more food.
Mahmoud encouraged farmers to apply modern farming methods and make effective use of the fertiliser to achieve better results.
NADF Highlights Importance of Smallholder Farmers
The Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the NADF, Engr Mohammed Ibrahim, said the programme reflects the government’s commitment to inclusive growth and agricultural development.
He explained that agriculture plays a significant role in job creation, rural development and improving livelihoods across the country. According to him, ensuring that fertiliser reaches genuine farmers at the right time is essential to maximising the impact of the intervention.
The NADF stated that the fertiliser distribution programme is expected to lower farming expenses, increase crop production and improve access to agricultural inputs.
Abuja's administration also pledged continued collaboration with agricultural institutions, development partners and stakeholders to provide farmers with training, extension support and improved market opportunities.
The government said the intervention forms part of broader efforts to develop a sustainable agricultural system capable of meeting the food needs of Nigeria’s growing population.
