FG Drives National Action on Animal Genetics Reform

News in brief:

-FG pushes coordinated national framework on animal genetics to improve livestock productivity and resilience.

-Experts tasked with developing data-driven protocols to safeguard indigenous breeds and strengthen food systems.

The Federal Government has intensified efforts to transform Nigeria’s livestock sector through a coordinated national approach to animal genetics.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ consultative workshop in Abuja, the Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, urged experts to develop practical and science-driven solutions to longstanding challenges in Animal Genetic Resources management.

He emphasised that Nigeria’s livestock sector remains critical to food security, rural livelihoods, and economic resilience, noting that a harmonised animal breeding policy is now a national priority.

Data Identified as Foundation for Reform

Maiha stressed that effective reform must begin with credible baseline data on indigenous livestock breeds, including their distribution, genetic composition, and adaptive traits.

According to him, without reliable data, it would be difficult to define breeding objectives or implement meaningful conservation strategies.

“Without accurate baseline data, it is impossible to design appropriate breeding objectives or determine which breeds are best suited for specific agro-ecological zones,” he said.

He also highlighted the importance of continuous monitoring systems to detect genetic erosion, prevent extinction risks, and support timely interventions.

Alignment with Global Standards

The minister noted that Nigeria’s approach aligns with global frameworks, including the Global Plan of Action for Animal Genetic Resources and the Interlaken Declaration.

He tasked stakeholders with developing harmonised and implementable protocols that would strengthen data systems, support biodiversity conservation, and enable evidence-based policymaking.

Also speaking at the event, the Director of Ruminants and Monogastric Development and National Coordinator on Animal Genetics, Victor Egbon, urged participants to prioritise simplicity and inclusiveness in designing the protocols.

He stressed that solutions must be practical enough to be implemented across all states, adding that the government is ready to institutionalise and scale the outcomes nationwide.

Milestone for National Livestock Strategy

Earlier, the National Coordinator of the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project, Dr Sanusi Abubakar, described the workshop as a significant milestone in implementing Nigeria’s National Strategy on Animal Genetic Resources, launched in June 2025.

He explained that characterisation provides the scientific basis for understanding livestock breeds, while inventory and monitoring systems ensure data-driven decisions and timely interventions.

The renewed focus on animal genetics signals a strategic shift towards science-led livestock development in Nigeria.

If effectively implemented, the reforms could improve productivity, preserve indigenous breeds, and strengthen the country’s food security and agricultural resilience.
