—The facilities are expected to improve animal healthcare access, disease surveillance, livestock productivity, and food security.
The Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development (FMLD), has handed over newly constructed Veterinary Primary Health Centres to the Lagos and Ogun State Governments as part of efforts to strengthen animal healthcare delivery and improve livestock productivity nationwide.
The Veterinary Primary Health Centre located in Epe, Lagos State, was officially handed over on May 13, 2026, to the Lagos State Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems. Similarly, the facility in Ijebu Igbo, Ogun State, was handed over earlier on May 5, 2026, to the Ogun State Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security through the Assistant Director of Veterinary Services.
The projects were implemented under the Federal Government’s initiative to establish 774 Veterinary Primary Health Centres across all local government areas in Nigeria.
FG Targets Improved Animal Healthcare
Speaking during the handover ceremony in Epe, the Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, represented by the Director of Animal Health and Reproductive Services, Dr Alao Mitchell, said the initiative is designed to bring veterinary services closer to livestock farmers.
According to the minister, the facilities will improve disease surveillance, prevention and control while strengthening livestock production and supporting rural livelihoods.
He added that improved veterinary service delivery is critical to enhancing food security and sustaining growth within Nigeria’s livestock sector.
Facilities Equipped for Service Delivery
The newly constructed centres are equipped with consultation and treatment rooms, laboratories, administrative offices, storage facilities, water supply systems, electricity, and perimeter fencing.
The ministry also acknowledged the support of Hon. Olawale Raji Elenwhe in facilitating the successful delivery of the Epe veterinary project.
The handover ceremonies attracted government officials, veterinary professionals, traditional rulers, livestock stakeholders, community representatives, and members of the media from both Lagos and Ogun states.
The initiative forms part of broader efforts by the Federal Government to modernise livestock infrastructure, strengthen animal health systems, and improve productivity across Nigeria’s livestock value chain.
