News in brief:
-Experts view Nigeria's import ban on non-ECOWAS goods as a boost to AfCFTA implementation.
-The policy is expected to strengthen local production and regional trade integration.
A university lecturer, Prof Simon Irtwange, has said that the Federal Government’s restriction on the importation of certain goods from non-ECOWAS countries will support the effective implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
Irtwange, a Professor of Agricultural Processing and Storage at the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi, stated this in an interview in Abuja. He said the policy reinforces the need to strengthen intra-African trade and ensure the successful operation of the AfCFTA framework. He added that Nigeria must provide leadership to fully harness the opportunities embedded in the agreement.
Import Ban Targets Non-ECOWAS Countries
The Federal Government recently issued a circular banning the importation of selected goods from countries outside the bloc of West African states. Items affected include poultry products, cement, pharmaceuticals and agricultural goods.
According to the circular, the Import Prohibition List applies specifically to goods originating from non-ECOWAS member states. The revised schedule, dated April 1, outlines 17 categories of goods restricted from entry through Nigerian ports.
Irtwange, who is also the National President of the Yam Farmers, Processors and Marketers Association of Nigeria, said the policy could stimulate local production and enhance regional trade integration.
He noted that reducing dependence on imports from outside the region could encourage domestic industries and strengthen value chains.
Concerns Over Policy Continuity
However, the professor raised concerns about the inclusiveness of the policy formulation, noting that it was signed by a minister who left office shortly after.
He expressed hope that the current Minister of Finance would sustain the policy to avoid inconsistency.
Focus on protecting local industries
The updated import restriction list reflects the Federal Government’s broader strategy of protecting local industries and conserving foreign exchange.
Stakeholders say sustained implementation will be critical to achieving long-term trade and industrialisation goals under the AfCFTA framework.
