News in brief:
-Federal Government and NSIA deepen collaboration to strengthen Nigeria’s dairy value chain through improved cattle genetics.
-Initiative targets increased local milk production, reduced imports, and sustainable livestock development.
The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to expanding large-scale dairy production and processing through a strategic partnership with the Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority.
The Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, disclosed this during a courtesy visit by a Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) delegation in Abuja, emphasising the importance of coordinated efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s dairy sector.
Maiha stated that the Ministry would provide technical support for the initiative by establishing a Technical Working Committee comprising relevant departments.
According to him, the committee will work closely with NSIA to develop implementation modalities, generate innovative dairy product concepts, and establish a robust framework for monitoring and execution.
Alignment with National Livestock Strategy
The initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s National Livestock Growth Acceleration Strategy, which aims to boost local dairy production, strengthen rural economies, and promote sustainable development.
The minister also assured stakeholders of the government's support in facilitating access to critical infrastructure, including power and energy, to ensure global best practices in dairy production.
Focus on Genetics and Productivity
NSIA Senior Vice President, Iruansi Itoandon, stated that the engagement would deepen collaboration on the UK Dairy Project.
He explained that the project focuses on strengthening Nigeria’s dairy value chain through improved livestock productivity, sustainable milk production systems, and strategic investments.
Itoandon noted that key areas of focus include improving cattle genetics, enhancing feed availability, and optimising pasture management.
He added that the initiative is designed to reduce Nigeria’s reliance on imported dairy products while building a more resilient local industry.
The project also prioritises capacity development, with training programmes planned for farmers and extension officers to support knowledge transfer and long-term sustainability.
Progress Recorded in Nasarawa Dairy Projects
The NSIA delegation highlighted ongoing dairy development efforts in Nasarawa State, noting progress in modernising farming practices and increasing local milk production capacity. They emphasised the importance of strengthening partnerships between government institutions, private investors, and international stakeholders to drive the sector forward.
The NSIA partnership signals a deliberate push towards transforming Nigeria’s dairy industry through improved cattle genetics and structured investment.
If implemented effectively, the initiative could significantly enhance local milk production, reduce import dependence, and strengthen the country’s broader livestock economy.
