News in brief:
-FG says livestock sector reforms and partnerships will deliver tangible gains within months.
-Investments targeting dairy, beef, fodder, poultry and more are expected to drive food security and peacebuilding.
The Federal Government has reassured Nigerians that its livestock transformation agenda is already gaining traction and will soon deliver meaningful, visible improvements nationwide.
Speaking at the maiden National Council on Livestock Development in Yola, Adamawa State, on Monday, 24 November 2025, the Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, said the Ministry’s partnerships and investments are practical initiatives designed to produce measurable outcomes.
Major Value Chains Targeted for Investment
He revealed that several bilateral and private-sector engagements have matured into strong commitments, with companies preparing targeted investments in dairy, beef, fodder, small ruminants, poultry, piggery, animal breeding, and animal identification systems.
“We will see the physical manifestation of these engagements in a few months,” Mukhtar assured.
He added that development partners are actively supporting dairy development, peacebuilding, and climate-smart livestock production interventions, which are expected to improve incomes and security for pastoralists and farming communities.
Strategic Coordination Through the National Council
The Minister said the new Council will harmonise national strategies, attract investment, and reposition the livestock sector as a significant driver of food security, rural development, peace, and economic diversification.
Created 16 months ago, the ministry aims to grow the livestock sector’s contribution to the economy from $32 billion to $74 billion by 2035, guided by the National Livestock Growth Acceleration Strategy (NL-GAS) and the National Livestock Master Plan.
Maiha urged stakeholders to collaborate, describing the sector as a potential “beacon of prosperity, a source of national pride, shared progress, peace, and food security for all Nigerians.”
Adamawa Seeks More Support for Ranching
In his remarks, Adamawa State Governor Rt. Hon. Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, represented by Deputy Governor Prof. Kaletapwa George Farauta, said livestock remains a key pillar of the state’s economy.
She noted that Adamawa established its own Ministry of Livestock Development more than two decades ago and is one of the leading states implementing viable ranching systems under the National Livestock Transformation Plan (NLTP). She appealed for increased funding support to scale up the state’s Pilot Ranch Project.
