FG Strengthens Capacity for Livestock Methane Emissions Monitoring through Enumerators’ Training
By Chinwendu Ohabughiro | Jan 05, 2026 | 0 comments

News in brief:
-FG has commenced specialised training for enumerators to improve livestock methane emissions monitoring and data credibility.
-The initiative supports climate action, access to carbon markets, and evidence-based reforms in the livestock sector.
A two-day training programme for enumerators on livestock methane emissions monitoring recently concluded in Abuja, as part of Nigeria’s efforts to establish credible, country-specific climate data to support sustainable livestock development.
The training featured technical sessions led by Mr Joshua Omozoje, a Sustainability Analyst, who introduced participants to the Netzence Close Carbon Technology. Additionally, Mr Joshua Fiafiadumo Edward delivered a detailed presentation on field data integrity, confidentiality, and compliance protocols.
Omozoje explained that methane is a significant greenhouse gas with direct implications for climate change mitigation within the livestock sector.
Real-Time Measurement and Verification
He demonstrated how the Close Carbon Platform enables real-time measurement of livestock methane emissions using Internet-of-Things devices that transmit secure, tamper-proof data from livestock clusters to a central digital registry.
According to him, the platform supports accurate greenhouse gas quantification, reporting, and verification, while enabling the generation of carbon reduction instruments through transparent blockchain-backed systems.
Aligning with Global Standards and Climate Finance
Participants were trained on defining emission boundaries, establishing baseline emissions, applying internationally recognised standards such as ISO 14064 and IPCC guidelines, and converting methane reductions into carbon dioxide equivalents.
The sessions highlighted how credible emissions data would strengthen Nigeria’s Nationally Determined Contributions, unlock access to climate finance, and position the livestock sector to participate meaningfully in global carbon markets.
Data Protection and Ethical Compliance
In a complementary session, Mr Edward emphasised strict adherence to data ethics, confidentiality requirements, and the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023. He stressed the importance of safeguarding national strategic data assets and ensuring informed consent in the collection of personal and farm-level information.
The training underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to evidence-based policymaking, climate accountability, and the sustainable growth of Nigeria’s livestock sector through reliable data and internationally compliant monitoring systems.
