FG Urged to Include Organic Fertiliser in Presidential Fertiliser Initiative

News in Brief

-Organic Fertiliser Producers urge the government to include organic fertilisers in the Presidential Fertiliser Initiative for better soil revival and farmer savings.

-The association's president hailed PFI's job creation and price stability feats, but pushes for import curbs to fortify food systems against climate woes.

The Organic Fertiliser Producers and Suppliers Association of Nigeria (OFPSAN) has urged the federal government of Nigeria to give organic fertiliser a formal place within the Presidential Fertiliser Initiative(PFI). It argues that integrating organic fertiliser products into the national programme will increase its impact for farmers in the country.

OFSPAN president, Alhaji Adams Musa, led the call for national uptake of organic fertiliser during a press conference in Abuja. He explained that these fertilisers are an efficient solution to restore Nigeria’s soil vitality and end farmers’ search for safer and more economical ways to increase harvests.

“Organic fertiliser is not just an alternative input but a critical component for long-term agricultural sustainability,” he said.

He noted that organic fertiliser can help restore degraded land, improve crop quality, support regenerative farming and reduce long-term production expenses for small growers.

Sustainable Agriculture Amidst Changing Climate

During the media engagement, Musa emphasised that beyond helping farmers to boost yield, safely improving the health of the soil and the surrounding environment ultimately improves the health of the population.

He said that sustainable agricultural systems must become the foundation of national food security, especially as climate conditions become increasingly unpredictable.

Musa acknowledged the government’s investment in local fertiliser blending under the Presidential Fertiliser Initiative, describing it as a programme that has stabilised prices, created employment opportunities and limited the country’s dependence on imported inputs. He argued that these gains can be consolidated if organic fertiliser becomes part of the national framework.

Import Curbs and Policy Enforcement

The organic fertiliser producers also charged authorities to fully enforce existing rules that allow only the Federal Government to import fertiliser raw materials. The body stated that adherence to this policy would curb the circulation of poor-quality products, protect local industries, and prevent market distortions.

Musa added that millions of farmers would benefit from a more balanced fertiliser system that recognises both organic and inorganic nutrients, which he said is necessary for durable productivity and environmental protection.
