-The two-year programme combines theory and practice to prepare graduates for careers and entrepreneurship in climate-smart agriculture, sustainability, research, and policy.
The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), has announced a Master’s degree in Agroecology for the 2025/2026 academic session, further strengthening its position as Nigeria’s leading agricultural tertiary institution. The programme received accreditation from the National Universities Commission (NUC) in 2025.
It is delivered under the European Erasmus+ AgroCOFA Project, an EU-funded initiative launched in 2023 to advance agroecology and sustainable agriculture education in West Africa through international collaboration. Six universities across Nigeria, Ghana, and Sierra Leone are participating in the programme, which combines theoretical learning with hands-on practice.
Programme Structure and Global Relevance
The two-year MSc Agroecology programme offers four specialisation options: Livestock Systems Agroecology, Natural Resources and Environment, Agribusiness and Sustainable Food Systems, and Crop and Mechanisation. Applications are completed through the programme’s online enrolment portal.
The programme is designed to train agroecologists, researchers, and innovators capable of promoting climate-smart and inclusive agricultural systems. It aligns with global frameworks such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the European Green Deal, providing students and young scientists with opportunities to network, influence agricultural policy, undertake cutting-edge research, and benefit from industry-based internships.
Career and Entrepreneurship Opportunities
Graduates of the MSc Agroecology programme are well-positioned for entrepreneurial careers that address the rising demand for sustainable food systems in Nigeria and internationally. With interdisciplinary training in agribusiness, crop and livestock systems, natural resources, and mechanisation, alumni can establish climate-smart farms, organic and regenerative agriculture enterprises, agroecology consultancies, and value-added processing businesses. In Nigeria, additional opportunities include soil restoration services, sustainable input supply ventures, digital farm advisory platforms, and community-based food systems that support smallholder farmers.
On the employment front, the degree opens pathways into research, policy, and technical roles within government agencies, universities, NGOs, development organisations, and agribusiness firms. Graduates can work as agroecology specialists, agricultural extension officers, sustainability analysts, project managers, and researchers focused on food security, climate adaptation, and rural development. The programme also prepares graduates for careers with multilateral institutions, international NGOs, research institutes, and agri-food companies implementing the UN SDGs and the European Green Deal.
