Global Fertiliser Shortage Boosts Demand for Dangote Products

News in brief:
-Global fertiliser demand is shifting towards Dangote Fertiliser as tensions involving Iran disrupt supply routes and reduce output.
-The Lagos-based plant is expanding its export reach while pursuing plans to become one of the world’s leading urea exporters.
Dangote Fertiliser Limited is experiencing increased global demand for its products as geopolitical tensions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran continue to disrupt international fertiliser supply chains.
The Vice President of Dangote Industries Limited, Devakumar Edwin, stated that buyers across several regions are increasingly turning to the company’s Lagos-based facility to fill supply gaps caused by reduced Iranian output.
Speaking in an interview with Bloomberg, Edwin noted that global demand had risen significantly as markets respond to the tightening fertiliser supply.
Strategic Shipping Route Raises Market Concerns
The ongoing geopolitical tensions have raised concerns over shipping activities in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime corridor through which roughly one-third of global fertiliser shipments pass.
Any disruption along the route could significantly affect international supply chains, prompting buyers to seek alternative suppliers capable of meeting urgent demand.
According to Edwin, the tightening global supply has created opportunities for the company to expand its export reach as international buyers search for reliable producers outside conflict-affected regions.
The Lagos-based fertiliser facility, owned by Aliko Dangote, is currently the largest producer of granulated urea and ammonia in Africa.
With an annual production capacity of about three million tonnes, the plant exports a large share of its output to international markets, including approximately 37 per cent to the United States.
Expansion Plans to Strengthen Global Position
Dangote Industries is also pursuing expansion plans aimed at strengthening its position in the global fertiliser market.
Aliko Dangote, the owner, has previously indicated plans for the company to challenge Qatar for the position of the world’s leading urea exporter within the next four years.
Beyond Nigeria, the group is expanding its presence across Africa. In August 2025, the company signed a $2.5 billion agreement with the government of Ethiopia to build a new fertiliser plant in the country’s Somali region.
Growing Role in Global Agricultural Inputs Market
As geopolitical tensions continue to disrupt global fertiliser supply routes, Dangote Fertiliser is emerging as a major alternative supplier.
Industry observers say the development is strengthening the company’s influence in the global agricultural inputs market while supporting its broader expansion across Africa.
