Japan Provides $853,000 Support to Fight Hunger in North-East Nigeria

News in Brief:

—Japan’s contribution will support emergency food assistance for families affected by conflict, displacement and economic pressures.

—WFP says continued international support is needed as food insecurity worsens across Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states.

The Government of Japan has provided food assistance worth $853,000 to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) to support vulnerable communities affected by hunger and humanitarian challenges in North-East Nigeria.

This contribution is expected to strengthen emergency food assistance programmes for households impacted by conflict, displacement and climate-related difficulties across the region.

WFP Receives Support for Vulnerable Communities

The donation was announced by the WFP Nigeria office, which described the funding as an important intervention at a time when millions of people in Northern Nigeria are facing severe food challenges.

It stated that the support would help provide essential food assistance to families struggling to meet their daily nutritional needs.

The organisation noted that prolonged insecurity, rising living costs and disruptions to livelihoods have increased the pressure on vulnerable households.

Conflict Continues to Affect Food Security

North-East Nigeria has experienced years of humanitarian challenges due to armed conflict, particularly in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states.

The crisis has affected farming activities, disrupted local markets and displaced communities, leaving many families dependent on humanitarian support.

WFP said the combination of insecurity, climate shocks and economic pressures continues to worsen food insecurity in the region.

Food Assistance Supports Stability

WFP Nigeria Programme Policy Officer, Itaru Furuta, said the Japanese contribution would help sustain life-saving interventions for communities affected by ongoing crises.

She explained that food support does more than address hunger, as it also helps reduce displacement pressures and strengthens community resilience.

According to WFP, families without access to basic support face increased risks linked to instability and loss of livelihoods.

Rising Costs Increase Pressure on Families

The organisation highlighted that increasing fuel prices and the rising cost of essential goods have made it harder for many households to afford adequate meals.

WFP shared the experience of a widow and mother of four in Borno State who said humanitarian assistance helped her provide food for her children after years of displacement.

The organisation said stories like this reflect the continued need for sustained assistance in affected communities.

The Japanese donation adds to recent humanitarian contributions supporting food security efforts in Nigeria.

WFP said continued support from international partners remains important as conflict and economic challenges continue affecting vulnerable populations.

The latest intervention will support emergency food programmes designed to help families survive immediate challenges while working towards recovery and resilience in North-East Nigeria.
