Jigawa State Targets ₦30 Billion Annually from Date Palm Farming

News in Brief:

-Jigawa State plans to earn ₦30 billion yearly from date palm farming, training 400 youths in hybrid production to boost local employment and exports.

-The initiative supports the national plan to plant 50 million date trees, helping fight desertification and enhance food security in northern Nigeria.

The Jigawa State Government has unveiled plans to generate more than ₦30 billion annually through date palm farming, a major step toward youth empowerment, job creation, and agricultural diversification in northern Nigeria.

Boosting Local Production and Rural Livelihoods

Officials said that the initiative aims to position Jigawa as Nigeria’s leading date palm producer, reducing dependence on federal allocation while strengthening local economies. The programme, according to agricultural experts, has the potential to significantly boost Nigeria’s agricultural gross domestic product (GDP) if properly executed and sustained through strong value-chain partnerships.

Tackling Desertification and Creating Jobs

The development comes after the federal government launched a national plan to plant 50 million date palm trees in Jigawa under efforts to combat desertification and restore degraded land across northern Nigeria.

State officials confirmed that 400 youths have already been trained on hybrid date palm cultivation techniques, equipping them with modern skills for nursery management, irrigation, and post-harvest handling.

“Each seedling can produce over 70 kilograms of dates initially, and with proper management, can generate as much as ₦7 million monthly,” an official said.

Partnerships for Environmental Restoration

The project was officially flagged off by the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, alongside the Deputy Governor of Jigawa State and the Director-General of the National Agency for the Great Green Wall (NAGGW). Officials say the collaboration aligns with Nigeria’s broader climate adaptation and economic diversification goals, providing a model for integrating environmental sustainability with agricultural enterprise.
