News in Brief:
-Kaduna State has secured a $450 million Nigeria–China partnership to develop large-scale poultry infrastructure and strengthen domestic production.
-The project aims to expand value chains, create jobs, and support federal food security efforts.
Nigeria and China have formalised a $450 million poultry development deal, with Kaduna State designated as the lead implementation site. Governor Uba Sani announced the agreement after a meeting with Chinese Ambassador Yu Dunhai and executives of the Nigeria–China Strategic Partnership (NCSP). The initiative is one of the largest single agricultural investments in the country and is expected to expand poultry production, deepen value chains, and improve market access for farmers.
Construction Begins December 2025
Kaduna State has earmarked 7,000 hectares for the project, with construction scheduled to commence in December 2025. Facilities planned for the site include commercial poultry farms, feed mills, hatcheries, processing units, and training centres for farmers and agro-professionals. A Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV), supported by both governments, will oversee implementation and coordinate technology transfer, infrastructure rollout, and operational guidelines.
Economic and Food Security Impact
Governor Sani attributed the project’s rollout to federal support, noting President Bola Tinubu’s selection of Kaduna as the pilot location. He emphasised the central role of agriculture in Nigeria’s economy, citing its significant contribution to GDP and employment. According to him, the poultry partnership will reduce import dependence and strengthen local supply chains.
NCSP Director-General Joseph Tegbe said the initiative is structured to create a sustainable poultry ecosystem. He highlighted the benefits of Chinese farming techniques, including improved productivity, stronger disease management systems, and lower production costs. He added that the model could inform future agribusiness collaborations across Africa.
FG Backs Kaduna’s Agro-Industrial Shift
Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Abubakar Kyari commended Kaduna for transitioning toward large-scale agro-industrial operations. He noted that the plan aligns with federal food security priorities and efforts to build export-ready agricultural sectors. Minister of State for Agriculture Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi stated that Kaduna’s budgetary commitment to agriculture reflects progress toward the Malabo Declaration target of allocating 10% of state budgets to the sector.
The $450 million investment is projected to generate over 350,000 jobs and support rural development through new infrastructure and training programmes. Officials anticipate improved poultry output, stronger local consumption, and greater participation of women and young people across the value chain.
