News in Brief:
-Korean food exports to Africa rose 72% to $174.3 million, with seafood accounting for over 70% of total shipments and rising demand for noodles and sauces.
-Nigeria and Ghana led the import growth, while Korea’s overall food exports topped $10 billion globally by September 2025.
Korean food exports to Africa have recorded a significant surge, growing by 72% in the first nine months of 2025, positioning the continent as one of the fastest-growing destinations for K-food worldwide, according to data released by the Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corporation.
Between January and September, K-food exports to African countries reached $174.3 million, while export volume rose 45% to 183,000 metric tons.
Seafood Leads Korean Food Trade to Africa
Seafood dominated the exports, accounting for over 70% of total shipments to Africa, valued at $124 million. Experts attribute the growth to Africa’s expanding aquaculture markets and growing consumer preference for imported seafood products.
However, the report also shows diversification beyond seafood, with rising exports of instant noodles (ramyeon) and sauces, reflecting evolving consumer tastes and cultural exchange across the continent. Instant noodle exports climbed 33.9% to $7.77 million, while sauce exports increased 22.5% to $4.57 million.
Nigeria, Ghana Drive African Demand
Nigeria and Ghana have emerged as the leading importers of Korean food products. Nigeria ranked as the top African destination, importing $36.6 million worth of Korean food, a 100.3% increase from 2024.
- Ghana followed closely, recording a nearly 300% surge to $36.4 million. Other notable importers include the Ivory Coast (+62.3%), South Africa (+50%), and Tunisia (+48.1%).
Trade analysts note that the surge highlights Africa’s growing appetite for Korean cuisine and seafood, as well as increasing cultural influence through media and entertainment.
K-Food’s Global Expansion Continues
Globally, Korean food exports have surpassed $10 billion as of September 2025. The United States remains the largest importer, with a 15.3% increase. European destinations recorded 15.8% growth, and exports to Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries rose 9.6%.
Analysts say the global demand for Korean food reflects a blend of strategic market expansion, cultural diplomacy, and shifting global diets.
“Korean food’s rise in Africa mirrors global patterns, it’s not just about flavor, but brand identity and trust in product quality,” one trade analyst said.
