The Lift Above Poverty Organisation (LAPO) has called for increased investment in sustainable poultry farming to strengthen food security and drive inclusive economic growth across Nigeria.
The call was made during the second edition of LAPO’s Annual Chicken Fair, held simultaneously in Benin City, Abuja and Lagos.
Poultry as a Driver of Food Security
Speaking at the Lagos event, the President of LAPO, Barrister Faith Osazuwa-Ojo, stated that the event was designed to promote local production, create employment and support small-scale poultry farmers, particularly women and young people.
She described poultry farming as a critical segment of Nigeria’s agricultural value chain, noting that it offers accessible opportunities for income generation and nutrition security.
Focus on Sustainability and Inclusion
Osazuwa-Ojo, who was represented by the Executive Vice President of LAPO, Dr Victor Noruwa, said the 2025 edition of the fair was themed Sustainable Poultry Farming: Innovations for Food Security and Economic Growth.
According to her, the theme reflects the urgent need to address food insecurity while promoting inclusive development through agriculture.
“Poultry farming remains one of the most accessible pathways to nutrition security, income generation and employment for millions of Nigerians,” she said, adding that empowering smallholder farmers was essential for building resilient local economies.
LAPO’s Role In Supporting Farmers
She noted that over the years, LAPO has played a significant role in promoting agriculture and strengthening food security nationwide through targeted interventions.
These initiatives include agricultural financing, capacity-building programmes, market-linkage platforms and advisory services aimed at supporting smallholder farmers and agri-entrepreneurs.
Through these efforts, she said, LAPO has helped to improve productivity, raise incomes and expand access to affordable and nutritious food within communities.
