Liberia Turns to Nigeria for Agricultural Technology, Irrigation Expertise

News in brief:

-Liberia and Nigeria’s Jigawa State are exploring agricultural partnerships focused on rice production, mechanisation, and farmer support.

-The cooperation aims to boost food security, attract investment, and strengthen Liberia’s agricultural productivity.

Liberia and Nigeria’s Jigawa State have initiated a new phase of agricultural cooperation aimed at strengthening food security, improving productivity, and attracting investment into the sector. The development followed high-level bilateral talks between Liberia’s Minister of Agriculture, Dr J. Alexander Nuetah, and the Governor of Jigawa State, Umar Namadi.

During the meeting, J. Alexander Nuetah emphasised that Liberia’s agricultural strategy is strongly linked to achieving national rice security.

He explained that the Liberian government is prioritising increased production through land development, mechanisation, irrigation systems, and value addition across the rice value chain. Nuetah noted that collaboration with Jigawa State presents an opportunity for Liberia to leverage proven agricultural development models and strengthen public-private partnerships.

Technical Cooperation and Farmer Support

According to Liberia’s Ministry of Agriculture, discussions between both sides centred on several areas of cooperation, including rice production, support for smallholder farmers, and technical exchanges.

Liberia is seeking to improve productivity by adopting best practices implemented in Jigawa State, particularly in areas such as mechanisation, irrigation development, and structured farmer support programmes.

These measures are expected to help Liberia strengthen its agricultural systems and expand domestic food production. Governor Umar Namadi reaffirmed his commitment to deepening cooperation with Liberia, noting that agriculture remains the backbone of the economy in Jigawa State.

He highlighted several policy measures introduced by the state government to support agricultural growth, including the expansion of cultivated land, improvements in seed systems, the establishment of mechanisation centres, and investments in irrigation infrastructure.

According to the governor, these interventions have significantly increased agricultural productivity while reducing dependence on food imports.

Prospects for Regional Agricultural Investment

Liberia and Jigawa State expressed optimism that the engagement will lead to concrete partnerships and investment opportunities in agriculture. Officials from both sides indicated that the talks could eventually evolve into a broader bilateral cooperation framework aimed at strengthening Liberia’s agricultural sector and enhancing its competitiveness within the regional economy.

The partnership also reflects growing interest among West African governments in sharing agricultural technologies, policy experiences, and investment opportunities to accelerate food production across the region.
