Livestock Ministry Commissions Model Veterinary Hospital, Mobile Clinic in Adamawa

News in brief:

-Minister of Livestock Development commissions new veterinary hospital and mobile clinic in Yola.

-This facility is part of 21 new veterinary hospitals being delivered through the L-PRES programme.

The Federal Government opened a modern veterinary hospital and a mobile veterinary clinic in Yola, Adamawa State, signalling renewed focus on boosting livestock productivity and ensuring better animal healthcare services nationwide.

During the commissioning, Minister of Livestock Development Idi Mukhtar Maiha stated that the move demonstrates President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s resolve to give the livestock sector the attention it has long lacked.

“Mr President deemed it fit last year to create the Ministry of Livestock Development for the first time in 64 years. We are here today as testimony to that commitment,” Mukhtar said.

21 Veterinary Hospitals Under L-PRES

The facility, built under the World Bank-assisted Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES), is one of seven facilities that have already been completed and equipped. Adamawa State joins Sokoto, Enugu, Niger, Ondo, Edo and Borno States as beneficiaries. Fourteen more are currently under construction, bringing the total to 21 across participating states.

Mukhtar explained that the Adamawa centre will serve as a hub for veterinary excellence, providing reliable services to both local livestock farmers and nomadic pastoralists.

The new hospital features diagnostic services, consulting rooms, and a fully equipped surgical theatre for emergency and elective procedures. A mobile veterinary vehicle was also commissioned to extend medical outreach to remote livestock settlements.

The Minister urged officials to maintain and deploy the infrastructure responsibly for long-term benefits.

Stakeholders Welcome the Development

President of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), Baba Othman Ngelzarma, expressed delight over the project, saying it restores confidence among pastoralists who often struggle to access veterinary support.

The Lamido of Adamawa, His Royal Highness Dr Muhammadu Barkindo Aliyu Mustapha, applauded the project and advocated peaceful coexistence between farmers and herders to ensure economic stability.

Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, represented by his Chief of Staff, Dr Edgar Amos, encouraged livestock owners and communities to take full advantage of the hospital to strengthen animal health and livelihoods.
