News in brief:
—NDLEA operatives destroyed two cannabis farms in Edo State with an estimated yield of 1,400kg during anti-drug operations.
—Four suspected drug traffickers were also arrested in separate raids across Benin City and Uhumwonde LGA.
Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Edo State Command, have destroyed two cannabis farms in Ago Forest, Orhionmwon Local Government Area (LGA).
Commander Mitchell Ofoyeju disclosed this in a statement to the media, noting that the cannabis plantations had an estimated yield of 1,400 kilograms (kg).
He added that four suspected drug traffickers were arrested during separate operations carried out within the past week.
Cannabis Farms Destroyed
“In a sustained offensive against drug trafficking and abuse, the state command has destroyed two cannabis plantations with a yield of 1,388.42kg and arrested four suspected drug traffickers in the past week,” Ofoyeju said.
According to him, no arrests were made at the cannabis farms because the cultivators were absent during the raid. The operation formed part of the agency’s continued crackdown on illegal drug cultivation and trafficking across Edo State.
Ofoyeju added that three female suspects and one male suspect were apprehended during separate raids conducted behind the Oredo Local Government Secretariat in Benin City, the Oluku area of the metropolis, and Uduwuga in Uhumwonde LGA.
The suspects were identified as Eniye Osague, 25; Osaretin Erabor, 43; Vivian Chukwuma, 38; and Osigwe Omogie, 44.
NDLEA Recovers Cannabis, Methamphetamine, Tramadol
The commander said Osague was arrested behind the Oredo Local Government Secretariat on May 15, 2026, with 272 grammes of 'Scottish Loud,' a highly potent strain of high-THC marijuana found in unregulated street markets.
He added that Erabor was apprehended at the same location with 914 grammes of cannabis sativa.
According to him, Chukwuma was arrested at Hausa Quarters, Oluku, Benin City, with 315 grammes of cannabis loud, 22 grammes of Colorado, 38 grammes of methamphetamine and 30 grammes of tramadol 100mg.
The fourth suspect, Omogie, was allegedly found in possession of 113 grammes of cannabis sativa, eight grammes of loud and five grammes of tramadol.
NDLEA, NDDC Hold Anti-Drug School Sensitisation
Beyond enforcement activities, Ofoyeju said the NDLEA Edo State Command partnered with the Niger Delta Development Commission to organise a three-day school sensitisation programme in Benin City from May 13 to 15, 2026.
The programme, themed “Anti-Cultism/Drug Abuse in Secondary Schools”, focused on the topic Drug Abuse as a Catalyst to Secret Cultism and Related Anti-Social Vices.
Participating schools included Edo College, Western Boys High School and Uselu Grammar School, all located in Benin City.
According to the command, the programme reached a total of 1,505 male students and 250 female students, while facilitators were drawn from the NDLEA, the Nigeria Police Force and Everlink Network.
