Nigeria, Indonesia Scale Up Livestock Technology Exchange

News in brief:

-Nigeria and Indonesia advance livestock technology collaboration, building on successful artificial insemination projects in Sokoto and Kebbi.

-Both nations agree to deepen partnerships in breeding centres, pasture development, animal health, and capacity building.

Nigeria recently took another major step in strengthening international livestock partnerships as the Honourable Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, received the Indonesian Ambassador to Nigeria, H.E. Bambang Suharto, in Abuja. The Ambassador led a five-man delegation on a courtesy visit that advanced ongoing collaboration on livestock technology, breeding innovation, and capacity building.

Maiha underscored food security as a critical national priority, commending Indonesia’s steady support for Nigeria’s livestock transformation agenda. He highlighted the success of the artificial insemination project conducted in Sokoto and Kebbi States, where 1,000 doses of semen donated by the Indonesian Government achieved a 70% success rate and resulted in 20 calves delivered.

Nationwide Adoption of Model

Describing the initiative as a tangible demonstration of technology transfer at work, the Minister expressed Nigeria’s readiness to scale up similar interventions nationwide. He further noted that Indonesia’s advancements in livestock innovation present valuable learning opportunities capable of significantly boosting Nigeria’s productivity.

Maiha requested deeper collaboration in breeding-centre development, pasture production, animal health and disease-control systems, and certification processes. He added that more Nigerian states are expected to adopt the artificial insemination model to upgrade genetics, efficiency, and profitability across livestock value chains.

Responding, Ambassador Suharto praised Nigeria’s commitment to modernising its livestock ecosystem and reaffirmed Indonesia’s readiness to expand technical assistance. He announced that five professionals from the Ministry of Livestock Development will depart for Indonesia next week for a capacity-building programme, another milestone in the strengthening partnership between both countries.
