Nigeria Launches Nationwide Livestock Study to Strengthen Sector

News in brief:

-FG begins nationwide livestock baseline study to support data-driven policy and sector development.

-The study will provide benchmarks for monitoring performance, investment planning, and food security goals.

The Federal Government has commenced a nationwide baseline study to strengthen Nigeria’s livestock sector through evidence-based planning and policy development.

This initiative, led by the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, is designed to establish a credible foundation for the sector’s Monitoring and Evaluation framework while enabling data-driven growth.

According to the ministry, the research spans 67 result indicators and will assess the current state of the livestock sector.

The findings are expected to support systematic performance tracking, guide policy formulation, and inform strategic investment decisions.

The initiative also aligns with the government’s broader commitment to transparency, accountability, and results-oriented governance.

Comprehensive Value Chain Coverage

The ministry adopted a value chain approach to ensure holistic coverage of the sector. Key segments captured in the study include cattle production, both beef and dairy, poultry systems covering broilers, layers, and hatcheries, as well as small ruminants such as sheep and goats.

Other areas include piggery, micro livestock, feed and fodder systems, and essential services such as veterinary care, logistics, and market infrastructure.

The ministry conducted field engagements for the study between April 20 and 24, 2026, using a mixed-methods approach that combines quantitative and qualitative data collection.

This includes secondary data reviews, focus group discussions, and key informant interviews to ensure both analytical depth and accuracy.

Stakeholder Engagement Ensures Inclusivity

The study covered six selected states to reflect Nigeria’s geographic and production diversity.

Participants were selected from across the livestock ecosystem, including producers, pastoralists, ranch operators, processors, traders, marketers, input suppliers, service providers, and regulatory institutions.

Their contributions are expected to provide a balanced and realistic picture of the sector’s current challenges and opportunities.

Outcomes to Guide Policy and Investment

The outcomes of the baseline study are expected to be released in May or June and will serve as a benchmark for measuring sector performance.

The findings will also guide targeted interventions, improve coordination across the livestock value chain, and support long-term development strategies.

The livestock baseline study marks a critical step towards building a more structured and data-driven agricultural sector in Nigeria.

With reliable data and coordinated implementation, the initiative could enhance productivity, strengthen food security, and support sustainable economic growth.
