Nigeria, Taiwan Sign MoU on Agriculture, Bilateral Trade, Investments

News in brief:

-Nigeria’s Hybrid Culture Initiative and Taiwan’s My Exhibition Company signed a deal that will strengthen agriculture through technology transfer, training, and investment across crop, livestock, and aquaculture value chains.

-Nigerian farmers are expected to gain access to modern farming inputs, storage solutions, and international markets, helping tackle challenges such as post-harvest losses and low productivity.

Nigerian farmers and agribusiness players may soon gain access to new technologies, markets, and investment opportunities following a landmark partnership signed between Nigerian and Taiwanese organisations. The agreement is expected to strengthen agricultural development in Nigeria, expand export opportunities, and improve food systems across both countries.

An Agreement for Agricultural Growth

In Taipei, My Exhibition Company Limited of Taiwan and Nigeria’s Hybrid Culture, Technology and Innovation Promotion Initiative signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to attract investors and promote business ties in agriculture and other critical industries.

The MoU focuses heavily on the agricultural value chain – covering crop farming, livestock and poultry, aquaculture, hatcheries, greenhouse equipment, animal feed production, post-harvest storage, and agro-processing. This means Nigerian farmers could soon benefit from modern equipment, improved farming inputs, and better access to international buyers.

Speaking at the event, Ambassador David Ademola Adejuwon, President of Hybrid Culture Initiative, noted that the collaboration “will provide Nigerian farmers and businesses with practical opportunities to expand production and build sustainable trade relationships.”

A Wide Network of Support

The Taiwanese side brings a strong network of agricultural associations to the table, including the Association of Taiwan Organic Agriculture Promotion, the Taiwan Poultry Processing Association, the Taiwan Tilapia Alliance, and the Dairy Association of the Republic of China. These groups have decades of experience in advancing modern farming practices such as antibiotic-free livestock rearing, cold chain storage, and aquaculture biotechnology.

For Nigerian farmers, this opens the door to technical training, knowledge sharing, and affordable solutions to long-standing challenges like post-harvest losses and livestock diseases.

Why This Matters for Nigerian Agriculture

Nigeria is Africa’s largest economy, yet farmers still struggle with low productivity, poor storage facilities, and limited access to export markets. According to the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), post-harvest losses in sub-Saharan Africa account for up to 30% of food produced, cutting into farmers’ income and food availability.

By connecting Nigerian farmers with Taiwan’s expertise in greenhouse farming, aquaculture, and animal feed technology, the MoU could reduce these losses while also boosting yields. This aligns with Nigeria’s broader goal of achieving food security and diversifying the economy away from crude oil.

Looking Ahead: High-Level Forum in 2026

Both parties agreed to hold a major agriculture and aquaculture forum in Taiwan by the third quarter of 2026. The forum will also focus on renewable energy and finance – two sectors critical for modern farming.

Industry experts believe this could pave the way for joint ventures in agribusiness, giving Nigerian farmers access to global markets while introducing Taiwanese investors to Nigeria’s vast agricultural potential.
