Nigeria, US Agric Trade Crosses $700 Million

News in brief:

-US officials say agricultural trade with Nigeria is set to more than double, topping $700 million, with wheat imports playing a major role.

-A new shipment of 50,000 metric tonnes of US wheat worth $15 million arrived at Lagos’ Apapa Port, reinforcing Nigeria’s position as a top market for U.S. wheat.

Agricultural trade between the United States and Nigeria is projected to exceed $700 million in 2025, following sustained growth in US wheat exports to the country. The US Agricultural Counsellor, Chris Bielecki, disclosed in a statement shared by the US Mission in Nigeria.

A new shipment of 50,000 metric tonnes of US-grown wheat, valued at $15 million, arrived at the Apapa Port in Lagos during a visit by US Consul General Rick Swart, who inspected the offloading process.

Wheat remains a critical component of Nigeria’s major food staples, including bread, noodles, pastries, and other flour-based products, driving continuous import demand despite ongoing efforts to strengthen local production.

According to Bielecki, Nigeria is the third-largest export market for US wheat, with major processors like Flour Mills of Nigeria remaining consistent buyers.

He noted that the anticipated growth in trade volume will deliver mutual economic benefits, supporting American farmers, creating jobs in Nigeria’s agro-processing sector, and ensuring access to high-quality food inputs for Nigerian consumers.

“In 2025, U.S.–Nigeria agricultural trade is on track to more than double to over $700 million, benefiting farmers, businesses, and consumers on both sides of the Atlantic,” Bielecki said.

He added that the strengthening trade partnership reinforces the shared commitment of both nations to agricultural development, food security, and market-driven economic expansion.
