News in brief:
-Nigerian Breweries Plc has donated a 2-ton-per-day cassava processing facility to Awo-Omamma in Imo State to support job creation and local enterprise.
-The project aims to generate over ₦500 million in yearly revenue and strengthen agricultural value chains within the community.
Nigerian Breweries Plc handed over a 2-ton-per-day cassava processing facility to the Awo-Omamma community in Imo State, marking a new phase in the company's community investment. The initiative forms part of the organisation’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme aimed at promoting economic participation and strengthening rural livelihoods.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony in Owerri, Managing Director Thibaut Boidin said the facility was designed to support sustainable development and expand income opportunities for residents. He noted that the plant is projected to deliver around ₦500 million in annual revenue while creating direct and indirect jobs across the cassava value chain.
Boidin added that the donation aligns with the company’s long-standing CSR focus on education, health, water access, security, and economic empowerment.
“Today’s commissioning further demonstrates our commitment to spreading prosperity and hope in our host communities,” he said.
Facility Developed Through Community Engagement
The cassava processing plant was developed following a comprehensive needs assessment conducted jointly by Nigerian Breweries and community representatives. It described the project as a long-term, revenue-generating intervention intended to replace some of the socio-economic activities previously linked to the now-mothballed Awo-Omamma brewery.
Eze Dr Val Amanfo VI, the traditional ruler of Awo-Omamma, welcomed the investment, noting that the facility would support farmers, create employment for youths and women, and deepen collaboration between the company and the host community. He described the plant as a timely intervention that aligns with local development priorities.
Imo State Commissioner for Trade, Commerce and Investment, Rex Anunobi, commended Nigerian Breweries for maintaining a strong presence and positive relationship with the state. He stated that the cassava facility supports the government’s economic agenda by stimulating rural enterprise and improving household incomes.
Anunobi encouraged other private-sector groups to adopt similar development-oriented CSR initiatives that strengthen local economies and generate broad-based benefits for communities.
