Nigerian Breweries Targets 100% Local Sourcing of Agricultural Raw Materials

News in Brief:

— Nigerian Breweries plans to source 100% of its barley locally and currently supports more than 1,100 farmers through its Maltina Barley Project.

— Expanding local agricultural sourcing will reduce foreign exchange exposure, strengthen domestic value chains and create more opportunities for Nigerian farmers.

Nigerian Breweries Plc plans to increase local sourcing of agricultural raw materials, aiming to source 100% of its barley locally as it seeks to reduce dependence on imports and foreign exchange.

Managing Director Thibaut Boidin said the company already sources several packaging materials, including glass, cans, PET packaging and labels, through Nigerian suppliers. However, he said expanding domestic agricultural production remains a major priority.

He noted that local barley production would require sustained investment, infrastructure, government support and collaboration across the industry. He added that climate conditions and other factors could affect production outcomes.

Brewing Industry Eyes Wider Economic Impact

The initiative comes as Nigerian Breweries recently celebrated 80 years of operations in the country. Boidin said the company’s contribution extends beyond beverage production to agriculture, manufacturing, logistics, retail and hospitality.

He also highlighted the brewing industry’s proposed 10-year master plan, developed in collaboration with government and industry stakeholders, including the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria. The plan would encourage investment, strengthen domestic value chains and support job creation.

Boidin said Nigerian Breweries improved its financial position through a rights issue, cost-management measures and stronger brand performance.

He added that deeper local sourcing could help the company manage foreign exchange pressures while creating more economic opportunities for Nigerian farmers and suppliers.
