News in brief:
-Nigeria's environmental council has unveiled a greenhouse gas reduction initiative capable of cutting carbon emissions by up to 70 per cent.
-The programme aims to improve air quality, strengthen emissions monitoring and support Nigeria’s climate and public health commitments.
The Environmental Health Council of Nigeria (EHCON) has unveiled an initiative to reduce greenhouse gas emissions aimed at strengthening environmental health governance, improving emissions monitoring and protecting public health.
Registrar of the council, Dr Yakubu Baba, disclosed this during the unveiling of the initiative in Abuja.
According to him, the programme will also support Nigeria’s Nationally Determined Contributions under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and advance broader sustainable development goals.
Oxygen Fuel Energy Project to Cut Carbon Emissions
Baba explained that the project, known as Oxygen Fuel Energy, has the potential to reduce carbon emissions by up to 70 per cent.
He said the initiative aims to achieve cleaner air, reduce smoke and particulate matter, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and improve fuel efficiency, leading to economic savings for businesses.
The registrar described the programme as an environmental solution that also offers clear economic benefits.
According to Baba, the project is being implemented under the National Air Quality Programme of the Federal Ministry of Environment, in line with the National Environmental Health Practice Regulations, 2024.
He added that the initiative aligns with the environmental sustainability objectives of the Bola Tinubu administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Climate Change Linked to Public Health Risks
Speaking with journalists shortly after the unveiling, Baba said the programme reflects Nigeria’s commitment to protecting public health and safeguarding the environment while meeting international climate obligations.
He described climate change as a present public health emergency, linking air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions to respiratory illnesses, cardiovascular diseases, cancer and adverse pregnancy outcomes.
According to him, improving air quality is essential to reducing disease burdens and protecting vulnerable communities.
Stakeholders Urged to Support Initiative
Baba noted that the programme also supports national climate policies and key Sustainable Development Goals related to health, energy and sustainable cities.
He said reducing emissions from oil usage would help Nigeria meet its international climate commitments while protecting domestic resources.
The registrar called on transport unions, oil marketers, fleet operators, manufacturers and state and local governments to support the initiative as a shared national responsibility.
