Nigerian Farmers Decry Falling Tuber Market Prices
By Obinna Onwuasoanya | Dec 08, 2025 | 0 comments

News in Brief:
-Farmers across Nigeria say the recent drop in tuber prices is pushing them toward financial distress, with many unable to recoup their production costs.
-With yam and sweet potato prices falling by an average of 10.7%, some farmers fear debt, losses, and may abandon tuber cultivation next season.
As many Nigerians welcome the recent drop in food prices, farmers say the trend is pushing them toward financial distress. Several producers report that the current market prices for yam, potatoes, and cassava are far below their expected returns.
One yam farmer said the prices offered by buyers are so low that they would rather give their harvest to family and friends for free. Another farmer noted that potatoes have been left unharvested in the field, well past their harvest time, in hopes that allowing them to grow a little longer might help secure better prices.
High-Yield Lifeline for Smallholder Farmers
Nigeria is one of the world’s largest producers of tubers, which are widely cultivated across the country for their high efficiency and adaptability. Tubers generate more calories per hectare than many grains and can thrive in a variety of soil types and conditions. This makes them an accessible and profitable option for farmers who cannot afford the high input costs associated with vegetables and some cereals.
Their ability to remain stored in the ground for extended periods, providing flexible harvest times and a steady food supply, has also been crucial to sustaining rural livelihoods.
Price Crash Threatens Farmer Livelihoods
However, the recent crash in tuber prices is putting these livelihoods at risk. Many producers had projected their earnings based on market prices from about seven months ago. With prices now significantly lower, farmers fear they may be unable to repay loans or meet basic financial obligations.
Data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) shows that market prices for yam tubers and sweet potatoes have declined by an average of 10.7% nationwide.
Affected farmers say they are discouraged by the trend and frustrated by the lack of protection or intervention from policymakers. Some warn that they may abandon tuber production in the next farming cycle to avoid similar losses.
