News in Brief:
— Nigeria's First Lady recently called for stronger support for farmers and greater efforts to reduce food waste as Nigeria marked World Food Day 2026.
— She says innovation, sustainable practices and traditional knowledge are critical to building a food-secure future for Nigerian families.
Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, urged Nigerians to support farmers, reduce food waste and promote sustainable agricultural practices as the country marks World Food Day 2026. She made the call in a message commemorating World Food Day, under the theme, “Innovate Today. Nourish Tomorrow.”
She said the annual observance was an opportunity to reflect on the importance of innovation in strengthening food systems while preserving traditional knowledge that continues to support food production and livelihoods.
Innovation and Sustainability
Mrs Tinubu also stressed the need for Nigerians to embrace practices that make food systems more sustainable, particularly as the country works towards greater food security.
“Let us support our farmers, reduce food waste, and promote sustainable practices that will ensure access to safe and nutritious food for every family,” she said.
Her message placed farmers at the centre of efforts to build a more resilient food system, while also highlighting the role of consumers and communities in reducing waste and promoting responsible food practices.
The First Lady said achieving a food-secure Nigeria would require sustained commitment and collective action. She urged Nigerians to use World Food Day as a reminder to strengthen food systems today while protecting future generations.
She also wished everyone a happy World Food Day 2026 and called for continued action to achieve a more sustainable and food-secure future.
