Nigeria’s Livestock Ministry Debunks Open Grazing Ban Report

News in brief:

-Nigeria's government says open grazing is not yet banned, but the country is transitioning to modern ranching systems.

-It is rehabilitating 273 gazette grazing reserves as part of efforts to reduce farmer–herder conflicts and boost livestock productivity.

The Federal Government recently refuted claims circulating in the media that open grazing has been outlawed across Nigeria, insisting that no such definitive policy has been implemented.

Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, stated that Nigeria is currently adopting a phased transition from traditional open grazing to modern ranching. He stressed that the shift will be systematic, not abrupt.

According to the Minister, the government’s approach aims to enhance livestock productivity, reduce persistent farmer–herder clashes, and build a more sustainable livestock-driven economy.

273 Grazing Reserves Under Rehabilitation

Maiha revealed that Nigeria has 273 gazette grazing reserves, spanning over 4.5 million hectares nationwide. The Federal Government is working closely with states to rehabilitate and fully equip these reserves as operational hubs for pastoralists and livestock businesses.

“Pastoralists, like every other economic group, require a structured business environment,” he said. “The grazing reserves provided by law are meant to serve as business premises for all livestock activities. Our responsibility is to upgrade these reserves and facilitate their proper utilisation.”

The Minister cautioned against relying on speculative or inaccurate reports about livestock sector reforms. He urged citizens and stakeholders to follow official government communication channels for policy updates and guidelines.
