NiMet Tests Digital Platform to Deliver Climate Data to Farmers

News in Brief:

— NiMet is testing a digital platform to give Nigerian farmers and agricultural stakeholders access to location-specific weather and climate information.

— The NiMet Data Hub aims to improve farm planning, strengthen preparedness and reduce climate-related losses.

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has commenced testing of a digital platform designed to improve access to location-specific weather and climate information. This intervention is expected to benefit farmers and other agricultural stakeholders.

The NiMet Data Hub, developed in partnership with the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) and Crea2Solutions, is now an advanced Minimum Viable Product (MVP), according to a news report. The weather authority is testing its services on the platform.

The partners began working on the project in February 2026 under the Climate Services for Youth (CS4Y) and Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) programmes. By July, five months later, they had created a testable product.

It features climate forecast information and historical data to help investors estimate risks, plan for seasonal changes and make well-informed decisions.

Bridging the Climate Information Gap

Nigeria’s agriculture sector faces an information gap partly because farmers often lack access to weather and climate technologies tailored to the country’s conditions. The shortage of extension agents across the country also limits the timely delivery of critical information to farmers.

This initiative targets the country’s agricultural climate service issues, including fragmented data, limited coordination among information providers and difficulties translating technical forecasts into practical advice for farmers.

NiMet, ILRI, and stakeholders have focused on mapping Nigeria’s agro-meteorological data and advisory landscape to improve last-mile delivery of climate information. They also consider gender and social inclusion as they improve access to climate information.

Developing Location-Specific Farm Advisories

NiMet’s platform provides location- and context-specific weather advisories to make the information useful. Meanwhile, ILRI supports the agency with research data and the development of digital tools that make information easier for partners and decision-makers to use.

By making climate information more accessible and actionable, the platform is expected to help agricultural stakeholders prepare for weather-related risks, improve seasonal planning and reduce climate-related losses.

The initiative’s overarching aim is to improve agricultural productivity to support food security, climate-smart agriculture and digital agricultural services.
