Nuru Nigeria Trains, Empowers 7,500 Women Farmers

News in Brief:

-Nuru Nigeria trained and empowered 7,500 women farmers across Adamawa State to enhance agribusiness skills and financial access.

-The initiative highlights the ongoing need for gender equity and empowerment in Nigeria’s agricultural sector.

In celebration of the International Day for Rural Women, Nuru Nigeria, a leading nonprofit dedicated to rural development and women’s empowerment, has trained and supported over 7,500 women farmers across Adamawa State.

The two-day training, held in collaboration with development partners and financial institutions, brought together women from farmer groups, cooperative societies, and agricultural organisations across the 21 local government areas of the state.

Building Business Skills for Rural Women

Participants were trained on how to transform their farming activities into income-generating enterprises. The sessions covered value addition, teaching women how to produce and market sellable agricultural products, and how to access loans and grants to scale their agribusinesses.

According to the organisers, the training aimed to equip rural women with the tools to participate more actively in the agricultural economy and strengthen food security in their communities.

Barriers Still Exist for Rural Women

Speaking at the event, Nuru Nigeria’s Managing Director, Mrs Amy Gaman, expressed concern over the slow progress achieved since the 1995 Beijing Declaration on women’s rights.

She noted that millions of women still face obstacles limiting their access to opportunities, land ownership, and financial inclusion. “It’s time for renewed commitment to building a future where every woman and girl can reach her full potential,” she said.

Gaman also urged women to keep developing themselves, support gender-inclusive government policies, and challenge social norms that limit their progress in agriculture and beyond.

Empowering Women, Strengthening Agriculture

The initiative reflects a growing recognition that empowering women farmers is essential for Nigeria’s food security. With women making up nearly half of Nigeria’s agricultural workforce, interventions like Nuru Nigeria’s program not only boost rural incomes but also foster inclusive growth in the nation’s agribusiness sector.
