News in brief:
-Oyo State has warned residents and farmers to remain vigilant and follow flood prevention guidelines ahead of the 2026 rainy season.
-Authorities are clearing waterways and deploying early warning systems to reduce flood risks across the state.
The Oyo State Government has advised residents and farmers across the state to remain vigilant and comply with government advisories to prevent flooding and protect lives and property as the 2026 rainy season approaches.
The advisory was issued in a statement by Ademola Aderinto, Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, in Ibadan.
State Deploys Early Warning and Flood Prevention Measures
Aderinto stated that the government is implementing proactive measures to reduce flood risks across the state.
He noted that the ministry is working closely with the Oyo State Emergency Management Agency while utilising early warning systems installed under the Ibadan Urban Flood Management Project to alert residents days before possible flooding incidents.
According to the commissioner, the ministry has intensified efforts to clear rivers, drainage channels, and waterways across the state by removing debris and other obstructions that could hinder the free flow of water.
He explained that the exercise began during the dry season and will continue until the rains commence to ensure effective water flow.
Flood Prevention Measures Showing Results
Aderinto stated that since the beginning of Seyi Makinde's administration, the state has consistently implemented environmental management strategies that have helped reduce the occurrence of severe flooding.
He added that the government remains committed to strengthening preventive measures across vulnerable communities.
Residents, Farmers Advised on Safety Measures
The commissioner advised residents living along riverbanks, waterways, and other flood-prone areas to relocate to safer locations ahead of the rainy season.
He also urged farmers to pay close attention to forecasts issued by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), which predicts that rainfall may occur almost throughout the year with intermittent dry spells.
According to him, the changing climate pattern could affect planting cycles and crop production, and farmers should avoid planting during early rainfall that may not be sustained.
Aderinto urged residents to stay informed through official government channels and report illegal developments or obstructions along waterways.
He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property through improved environmental management and flood prevention initiatives.
