—Residents are appealing for humanitarian assistance after losing homes, food supplies and sources of livelihood.

A heavy rainstorm has destroyed more than 20 houses and farmlands in Nghassi community, Mandar Ward, Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State, leaving several families homeless and in need of humanitarian assistance.

The storm, which struck last Tuesday, was accompanied by strong winds that caused widespread destruction across the community.

Homes and Property Destroyed

According to residents, the rainstorm blew off rooftops, uprooted trees, brought down buildings and destroyed property worth millions of naira.

A resident, Bulus Ayuba Ritji, said many families were forced to seek temporary shelter with neighbours and relatives after their homes were damaged.

Although no fatalities were recorded, he said many affected households lost food, clothing, and other personal belongings during the incident.

Farmlands Also Affected

Ritji added that the storm also destroyed farmland and other means of livelihood, compounding the hardships faced by affected residents.

The destruction of agricultural land is expected to affect food production and household incomes within the community.

The Youth Leader of Bokkos Local Government Area, Christopher Luka, appealed to humanitarian organisations, government agencies and well-meaning Nigerians to provide emergency assistance to the victims.

He urged stakeholders to support displaced families with relief materials and other interventions to help them recover from the disaster.
