RMB Arranges $340m Refinancing to Expand Indorama Fertilizer Operations

News in Brief:

—Rand Merchant Bank has arranged a $340 million refinancing facility for Indorama Fertilizer and Chemicals FZE Limited.

—The financial boost would improve efficiency, operations, fertiliser production and support Nigeria's food security objectives.

Rand Merchant Bank (RMB), a division of FirstRand Group, has arranged a $340 million refinancing facility for Indorama Fertilizer and Chemicals FZE Limited, providing the company with a more competitive long-term funding structure to strengthen its fertiliser operations in Nigeria.

The medium-term facility was fully underwritten by a consortium of development finance institutions and international commercial banks, reinforcing RMB's long-standing partnership with the fertiliser manufacturer.

RMB Reaffirms Commitment to Industrial Growth

Executive Director and Head of Investment Banking at RMB Nigeria, Chidi Iwuchukwu, said the transaction demonstrates the bank's commitment to supporting strategic private-sector investments across Nigeria's heavy manufacturing sector.

He noted that the refinancing reflects RMB's ability to combine strategic financial advisory services with cross-border funding solutions to drive industrial development.

According to him, the facility also supports the continued expansion of Nigeria's non-oil export sector, in which Indorama Fertilizer remains a dominant player.

Indorama Dominates Nigeria's Non-Oil Fertiliser Exports

Iwuchukwu stated that, according to Central Bank of Nigeria statistics, Indorama Fertilizer accounted for more than 18 per cent of Nigeria's non-oil exports in 2024, making it the country's largest non-oil exporter.

He added that the company currently supplies about 75 per cent of Nigeria's domestic fertiliser market, playing a critical role in supporting agricultural productivity, food security and fertiliser availability for farmers.

He explained that the refinancing involved multiple financial institutions and a complex structuring process designed to deliver a more cost-effective funding solution aligned with the company's long-term financing objectives.

Refinancing Expected to Enhance Competitiveness

Senior Dealmaker and Head of Infrastructure Finance, Nigeria, at RMB, Enyinna Anumudu, described the transaction as a significant milestone for both the bank and Nigeria's manufacturing sector.

He said the financing would strengthen the long-term competitiveness of Nigeria's fertiliser industry by providing sustainable funding for domestic manufacturing and heavy industrial investments.

According to Anumudu, the facility will enable Indorama Fertilizer to continue meeting growing domestic demand while expanding export capacity, ultimately supporting Nigeria's drive towards food sufficiency and increased agricultural productivity.
