Sanwo-Olu Flags Off Rural Road Projects to Boost Agricultural Trade

News in Brief:

-Lagos State is building 114 rural roads to improve access to markets and reduce post-harvest losses for farmers.

-The project will create jobs, attract private investment, and strengthen the agricultural value chain.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has inaugurated the construction of 114 rural roads across all local councils in the state, a strategic move to strengthen agricultural trade and stimulate economic growth in rural communities.

Improving Market Access for Farmers

At the flag-off ceremony, Governor Sanwo-Olu explained that the new roads will make it easier for farmers to transport their produce to urban markets, reducing post-harvest losses and increasing income.

“Better road networks mean smoother access for our farmers. They can get their goods to buyers faster, preserve quality, and earn more for their hard work,” the governor said.

This initiative is part of Lagos State’s broader development plan to ensure infrastructure benefits extend beyond the city centre to rural areas, promoting inclusive growth and sustainable livelihoods.

Inclusive Development and Job Creation

Every local government area (LGA) and local council development area (LCDA) in Lagos will benefit from at least one new road project. The initiative is expected to create jobs for artisans, engineers, and local contractors, supporting employment and private sector participation in the state’s infrastructure drive.

Bolaji Kayode Robert, Commissioner for Local Government and Community Affairs, emphasised that the project reflects Lagos’ commitment to equitable development and rural transformation.

Strengthening Lagos’ Agricultural Value Chain

Experts believe that improved road networks can significantly boost the agricultural value chain by facilitating faster, more efficient movement of goods, encouraging private investment in food production, and improving access to logistics and storage facilities.

The rural road programme also has the potential to reduce transport costs for farmers, enhance food security, and promote economic resilience in rural communities.
