SEDC Launches ₦70bn Venture Programme to Boost Agritech Innovation in South-East

News in Brief:

-The South East Development Commission has launched a ₦70 billion venture capital programme to support youth-led, tech-driven startups.

-Through incubation and accelerator tracks offering up to $20,000, the initiative aims to scale solutions that improve productivity, market access, and food systems.

Nigeria’s agritech ecosystem has received a major boost following the launch of a ₦70 billion venture capital programme by the South East Development Commission. The South East Venture Capital Programme (SEVCP) is designed to support youth-led, tech-enabled businesses, with strong opportunities for startups transforming agriculture and food systems.

As part of its 2026 budget and 100-day action plan, the initiative aims to accelerate economic growth in the South-East by investing in innovation across key sectors—including agritech, which remains critical to food security and rural livelihoods.

Funding Opportunities for Agritech Startups

The programme is structured into two tracks to support agritech businesses at different stages. Early-stage founders with ideas or prototypes—such as farm management apps, irrigation solutions, or agri-market platforms—can apply under the Incubation category, which offers $5,000 in funding alongside mentorship and business support.

More established agritech startups with proven models can apply for the Accelerator track, where selected ventures will receive up to $20,000 to scale operations, expand into new markets, or improve technology infrastructure.

In total, 30 startups will be selected in this pilot phase through a pitch competition, with applications open from March 16 to April 3, 2026. The programme targets founders across Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo states.

Unlocking Growth Across the Agricultural Value Chain

For agritech entrepreneurs, the programme presents a unique opportunity to address some of Nigeria’s biggest agricultural challenges—ranging from low farm productivity to poor access to markets and financing.

With increasing demand for digital solutions in agriculture, startups focusing on precision farming, supply chain logistics, agro-processing, and climate-smart technologies stand to benefit significantly from the initiative.

The SEVCP also aligns with broader efforts to grow the South-East economy to $200 billion by leveraging technology and enterprise development. By supporting agritech innovation, the programme could help modernise farming practices, create jobs, and improve food systems across the region.

While some stakeholders continue to highlight infrastructure gaps such as power and transport, the focus on startup funding is seen as a critical step toward unlocking private-sector-driven growth.

For agritech founders in the South-East, the message is clear: this is a timely opportunity to secure funding, refine business models, and scale solutions that can transform agriculture in Nigeria.
