News in brief:
-Ebonyi state senator, Nwebonyi, promises legislative backing for rubber and cocoa cultivation.
-A group of young women farmers welcomed the commitment to land access and farm development.
The Senator representing Ebonyi North, Onyekachi Nwebonyi, recently pledged the support of the National Assembly for the cultivation of rubber and cocoa, describing agriculture as critical to Nigeria’s economic recovery.
Nwebonyi pledged while receiving members of the Young Women Ebonyi Farmers at his residence in Mbeke, Ishieke, Ebonyi State. He stated that sustained legislative backing would help reposition agriculture as a major driver of growth and employment.
Lawmaker Cites Oil Discovery as Setback to Agriculture
The senator said Nigeria’s discovery of crude oil contributed to the decline of agriculture, which once formed the backbone of the nation’s economy.
He stressed the need to return to the development of economic crops, particularly tree crops that provide long-term value and export earnings.
According to him, agriculture remains central to economic diversification and national stability.
However, he noted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is prioritising policies aimed at reviving agriculture, especially the cultivation of cocoa, rubber and oil palm.
“Your mission is a very good one. It aligns with the mandate of the federal government,” he told the delegation.
He added that his recent visit to Dubai was partly driven by discussions on reviving economic trees that sustained Nigeria before the oil boom.
Senator Promises Land and Farm Development Support
The lawmaker urged the Young Women Ebonyi Farmers to intensify sensitisation across the state on the benefits of investing in rubber and cocoa farming. He assured them of his continued support, including access to land and assistance with farm establishment.
“In my next empowerment programme, I will bring you to the forefront,” he said. “I will provide land, and you will guide us on procuring seedlings, establishing nurseries and developing the farms.”
Leader of the Young Women Ebonyi Farmers, Mrs Justina Nwofe, expressed appreciation for the senator’s commitment. She said the initiative would enhance women’s participation in agriculture, promote economic empowerment and strengthen food and income security in Ebonyi State.
