Troops Arrest Herders for Destroying Farmlands in Makurdi

News in brief:

-Soldiers intercept herders allegedly grazing cattle on cultivated farmlands, causing crop destruction in Makurdi.

-Suspects detained as troops intensify harvest-season patrols to prevent farmer–herder clashes.

Troops under the Joint Task Force, Operation Whirl Stroke, have arrested two herders accused of trespassing on farmlands and destroying crops during a routine harvest-season patrol in Makurdi, Benue State.

The incident occurred on November 20, 2025, when personnel stationed at Zongo Akiki reportedly intercepted the suspects while their cattle grazed on community-owned farmlands.

In a statement on Tuesday, the operation’s spokesperson, Lieutenant Ahmad Zubairu, said troops acted swiftly to protect farmers and secure food production during the critical harvest period.

“The vigilant troops intercepted the two herders after they reportedly led their cattle into cultivated farmlands belonging to local residents, resulting in damage to crops,” Lt. Ahmad Zubairu stated.

He said the soldiers’ rapid intervention prevented further destruction and forestalled a potential confrontation between farmers and herders.

According to Zubairu, the suspects have been detained for investigation and possible prosecution.

Commander Warns Against Retaliation

The Force Commander, Major General Moses Gara, commended the troops for professionalism and cautioned community members against taking the law into their own hands, noting that retaliation could escalate tensions and disrupt public peace.

He reminded pastoralists to obey regulations and refrain from conduct that threatens security or economic activities. Gara reaffirmed the task force’s unwavering commitment to secure farmlands and safeguard livelihoods across the region.

Kidnap Suspect Also Arrested in Taraba

Meanwhile, troops of the 6 Brigade, Nigerian Army/Sector 3, also operating under Operation Whirl Stroke, have arrested a suspected kidnap kingpin, identified as Alhaji Abubakar Bawa, in Wukari, Taraba State, on November 23, 2025.

Preliminary investigations link Bawa to another high-profile suspect, Umar Musa, who was apprehended a day earlier, both reportedly connected to a broader criminal network responsible for kidnappings, violent attacks, and other organised crimes across the region.
