US Launches Freedom 250 Livestock Initiative on Trade, Investment

News in Brief:

— The US Mission to Nigeria engaged government officials, agribusiness leaders and young Nigerians on strengthening the livestock sector and expanding agricultural trade and investment.

— The programme promoted private-sector partnerships, technology, finance and technical expertise to improve livestock productivity and create opportunities.

The US Mission to Nigeria has engaged Nigerian government officials, agribusiness leaders and young people on opportunities to strengthen the country’s livestock sector and expand agricultural trade between the two countries.

The engagement took place from August 10 to 13, 2026, under the US Mission’s Freedom 250 initiative and featured US livestock development expert Dr Gregg BeVier.

This programme was designed to promote stronger commercial relationships and identify opportunities for two-way trade and investment between both countries.

Building Private-Sector Partnerships

In Abuja, BeVier participated in the All-Africa Conference on Animal Agriculture, with support from the US Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Foreign Agricultural Service. He also met officials from the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development and the Livestock Reforms and Implementation Committee to explore how partnerships with American agricultural companies could contribute to Nigeria’s livestock development.

The programme also featured the US-Nigeria Livestock and Feed Connect, a business-to-business event that brought American animal husbandry companies together with Nigerian livestock businesses. Discussions focused on potential partnerships, technology, investment and opportunities to strengthen livestock productivity and value chains.

Beyond business leaders and policymakers, BeVier connected with audiences through the 30 American Spaces across Nigeria, highlighting opportunities for young Nigerians to help improve livestock productivity.

Expanding Agricultural Trade

The programme forms part of the US Commercial and Investment Partnership and is intended to support a more favourable business environment for agricultural investment in Nigeria.

It also builds on existing US-Nigeria exchange programmes, including the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) and Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI), while creating potential opportunities for future exchanges focused on agricultural finance and trade.

The initiative complements other American agricultural trade-support measures, including the USDA’s GSM-102 credit guarantee programme, which provides government-backed guarantees that help Nigerian banks and importers access financing when sourcing agricultural inputs from the United States.

For Nigeria’s livestock sector, increased access to international investment, technology, finance and technical expertise could help businesses improve productivity while creating new opportunities for farmers, processors and young people across the value chain.
