Zichis Agro Stock Drops 63% From May Peak as August Sell-Off Deepens

Zichis Agro Allied Industries Plc ended August 2026 on a weaker note, with its share price falling to ₦14.50 on the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) in the final week of the month.

The decline capped a difficult third quarter for the animal feed producer, whose stock has fallen steadily from above ₦24 at the start of August. The latest price represents its lowest level since March, extending a sharp correction from the highs recorded earlier in the year.

Zichis was officially listed on the NGX in January 2026 with 600 million ordinary shares. The stock quickly attracted investor attention after its share price surged by 859% between January and February, making it one of the exchange's most closely watched new listings.

From 859% Surge to August Correction

The rapid appreciation eventually prompted regulatory scrutiny. On February 23, Godstime Iwnekhai, Head of the Issuer Regulation Department at NGX Regulations, signed a bulletin announcing the suspension of Zichis share trading.

The suspension was not an allegation of wrongdoing against the company. Rather, NGX RegCo said the stock was under investigation following its unusually rapid and sporadic price movements.

Trading resumed on March 23, but Zichis did not return immediately to its pre-suspension price. The exchange adjusted the stock to ₦8.58 per share, compared with the ₦17.36 at which it last traded before the suspension.

The stock subsequently recovered strongly. It climbed to ₦40 in May, before correcting to slightly above ₦24 in June. By August, however, the downward trend had become more pronounced, with the share price falling to ₦14.50.

This means Zichis has lost more than 63% from its May peak of ₦40 and about 40% from the ₦24-plus level at which it began August.

Despite the recent correction, the stock remains significantly above its adjusted March price of ₦8.58.

The company's Executive Director, Finance and Strategy, Chris Ogbaisi, has defended Zichis' equity structure amid concerns surrounding its earlier price appreciation. He said Managing Director Anthonia Akabusi continues to hold more than 50% of the company's shares, arguing that the ownership structure does not support suggestions that Zichis was established as a pump-and-dump scheme.

Business Expansion vs Stock Market Performance

The decline in Zichis' share price has occurred while the company continues to outline plans for significant expansion.

Its factory is being ramped up to produce approximately 1,200 tonnes of animal feed per month, operating 12 production cycles across 20 days. The company has said the facility can produce about 40,000 bags of feed per month, with each bag selling for between ₦13,000 and ₦14,000.

At full production, Zichis projects monthly turnover of more than ₦540 million, according to Ogbaisi.

The company has also announced a ₦2 billion non-equity capital injection from investors Chilla Entertainment Limited and Winners Investment & Trust Limited. The funding is part of a broader ₦50 billion growth and expansion programme.

According to the company, the new capital will support higher poultry production, increased raw-material procurement for its feed mill and the development of a 2,000-acre palm estate in Ogun State.

Zichis has also urged investors to disregard what it described as misinformation about the company, arguing that some online claims were intended to weaken investor confidence while other market participants accumulated shares.

However, the company's operational expansion and its stock-market performance are two different measures of performance. Higher production capacity or projected turnover does not automatically translate into higher earnings, dividends or share prices.

How Zichis Compares With Other Agriculture Stocks

Zichis' sharp movements become more apparent when compared with other agriculture-related stocks on the NGX.

On a year-to-date basis, Zichis remains one of the strongest performers, with gains of more than 1,000% from its early-year levels despite the recent correction.

By comparison, Ellah Lakes Plc has declined by about 42% in 2026, while FTN Cocoa Processors Plc and Presco Plc have recorded gains of more than 40% over the same period.

The comparison highlights the wide variation in returns among agriculture stocks and the extent to which entry price and timing can influence an investor's experience.

Why Stock Investment Is Not Straightforward

Zichis' price history illustrates why investing in stocks is not simply a matter of identifying a company with strong growth plans and buying its shares.

A company's share price reflects market expectations, investor sentiment, liquidity, supply and demand, corporate performance and broader economic conditions. These factors can move independently of a company's immediate operational progress.

For Zichis, the stock price moved from ₦8.58 after its March adjustment to ₦40 in May and back to ₦14.50 in August. An investor who bought at different points during that period would therefore have experienced dramatically different returns despite investing in the same company.

Investors also need to distinguish between share-price appreciation and business performance. Production capacity, turnover projections, capital injections and expansion plans can provide useful information about a company's prospects, but they do not guarantee future share-price gains.

The Zichis example therefore offers a broader lesson for new investors: a stock's past performance is not necessarily a guide to its future performance. Understanding financial statements, valuation, earnings, liquidity, industry conditions and the risks surrounding a company is just as important as watching its price chart.
