News in Brief:
— Delta State has given Olam Agri 99.99 hectares of land at Ogwashi-Uku to build an animal feed production plant.
— The company says the plant will bring feed closer to livestock farmers in the South-South and South-East, where it identified a supply gap.
The Delta State Government has allocated 99.99 hectares of land at Ogwashi-Uku to Olam Agri for a proposed animal feed production plant. The project aims to strengthen agricultural development and food security in the state.
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori presented the Certificate of Occupancy to the company at a ceremony held at Government House, Asaba, on Wednesday.
Olam Agri’s Managing Director, Amit Agarwal, said the facility would bring animal feed production closer to markets in the South-South and South-East regions.
He added that the plant would help address the animal feed supply deficit in both regions. Improving access to feed for livestock farmers would further develop the agricultural value chain.
State Promises an Enabling Environment
Speaking at the event, Oborevwori said the investment would expand agricultural opportunities, create jobs and improve livelihoods across the state.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to providing an enabling environment for genuine investors. Peace and cooperation are essential to attracting investments and promoting economic growth, he revealed.
The governor added that the state would continue to support initiatives that advance agricultural development and create opportunities for residents.
Reports on the event did not state the plant’s capacity, cost or construction timeline.
Olam Agri’s Growing Feed Business
Rising feed prices threaten livestock farmers' livelihoods in Nigeria, accounting for the largest share of production costs. Nigerian poultry, fish and other livestock farmers have decried the issue, as feed is mostly imported and subject to forex volatility.
Olam Agri is one of the country's largest animal feed producers. The Delta project follows the company's recent move into the cattle feed market. The company launched its Tru Value cattle feed range in Kaduna State in September 2026, consisting of Beef Pellet, Beef Plus Pellet and Dairy Pellet. It was the company’s first move into ruminant nutrition in Nigeria.
Olam Agri already runs an integrated feed mill, poultry breeding farm and hatchery in Kaduna and an aqua feed plant in Ilorin, Kwara State. At the Asaba event, Agarwal said the company’s current feed facilities are in the South-West, and it wants production closer to customers in southern and eastern Nigeria.
The Obi of Ogwashi-Uku, HRM Obi Dr Ifechukwudi Okonjo II, welcomed the proposed investment. He urged the company to ensure residents benefit through jobs, internships, skills development and technology transfer.
